2. iSISTAQUIT in community
|

We are very privileged to have received an Aboriginal name, Ngurrajili , for this growth phase of our project, in which we will be broadening our reach Australia-wide. This name in Gumbaynggirr language means increase, share and continual giving. It exemplifies the spirit of iSISTAQUIT to share knowledge and practical support with health services, health professionals and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, so that one day we will achieve a collective vision of all babies being born smoke-free and having a good start in life.
Uncle Micklo, who gifted the naming, said he visions iSISTAQUIT Ngurrajili as ceremony, in dance, a celebration of giving, sharing and creation.
Uncle Micklo is a qualified Early Childhood teacher with a Masters in Indigenous Languages Education. He teaches Gumbaynggirr Language in the community.
Since 2014 Uncle Micklo is Head Aboriginal Language and Culture Trainer for the The Gumbaynggirr Language and Culture Nest, managed by the NSW Department of Education, and is currently Senior Education Officer for Aboriginal Languages.

The film was suggested by Uncle Tom Calma for promotion of our team to tell the iSISTAQUIT Story, how we engage with communities and work with health professionals across Australia.
The film is a great way of informing health professionals across Australia, the importance of culturally appropriate specialised medical training that’s available.

4. Birthing on Country news:
|
|
Our Research Team is now complete and under the direction of our two Chief Investigators, Professor Gillian Gould and Dr Marilyn Clarke, we have had a very busy and active time during August and September 2023.
Our goal has been to begin work with our research partners in establishing the Birthing on Country Research Project and we are pleased that two Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services in NT and SA have joined us on this project.
We are now very close to finalising our last research site (more later!)
Site visits are scheduled for September and November 2023, as our Project Manager Kym Yuke, and Senior Research Fellow Dr Moana Tane, visit communities, staff and Board members to present on the research.
During these visits we will seek feedback on how we can engage with participants and volunteers on the project and will take on board important cultural guidance, as we prepare our Ethics application, which is due in November 2023.
Our Senior Projects Manager Rebecca Hyland continues to inspire our team supporting a number of university events, leading us as we work very closely with our colleagues and co-researchers on the iSISTAQUIT project.

5. Community Advisory Board
|

We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community people who are passionate about Aboriginal health outcomes for our communities and who are creating smoke-free communities across Australia.
About our Smoke-Free Sistahood Community Advisory Committee
Our Community Advisory Committee will provide the iSISTAQUIT Team and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Steering Committee with a community perspective on how we can improve the health and wellness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and ultimately contribute to smoke-free pregnancies and smoke-free communities. They are made up of members with active community networks who can provide the advice, feedback, community perspectives and context, which helps to shape our project.
The Community Advisory Committees advise the iSISTAQUIT Team on a variety of topics such as Planning, Resources, Community Need, Surveys, Campaigns and Events. The Community Advisory Committee will raise awareness and become iSISTAQUIT Community Champions.
