1. Welcome to 2025

The iSISTAQUIT and Birthing on Country Teams have started 2025 strong with many amazing new things happening across both projects.

2. Huge Announcement: Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology—BIPS, iSISTAQUIT, and Southern Cross University have begun a new international partnership

We are excited to share that we will be working Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS to implement and adapt the iSISTAQUIT intervention for smoking cessation during pregnancy in Germany.

Prof. Gillian and the team will work with Bibiana Barrera Bernal Ph.D Candidate from Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS to implement and adapt the iSISTAQUIT intervention for smoking cessation during pregnancy in Germany.

Our evidence-based, culturally responsive program has shown promising results among Aboriginal women in Australia and will now be piloted with midwives and families in Bremen.

We are looking forward to the journey ahead, supporting families to quit smoking, create smoke-free environments, and build healthier futures.

3. iSISTAQUIT embraces the theme of World No Tobacco Day 2025 “Bright products. Dark intentions. Unmasking the Appeal.”

iSISTAQUIT embraces the theme of World No Tobacco Day 2025 “Bright products. Dark intentions. Unmasking the Appeal.”

The campaign aims to expose industry strategies that manipulate the appearance and appeal of tobacco and nicotine products. By unmasking these tactics, the initiative seeks to raise awareness, promote policy change, and reduce demand, especially among youth.

Each year is an opportunity to reflect on the impact that smoking causes on not just our own health but those around us who are our most vulnerable.

iSISTAQUIT is a wrap-around support for pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who want to quit smoking/vaping. It involves a model of care designed with culturally appropriate national best practice training. iSISTAQUIT provides vital training for Health Professionals and encouragement to communities and pregnant women to quit smoking/vaping.

iSISTAQUIT has continued to support First Nations women across the country with our unique online social media campaigns, we have also moved to the next phase of iSISTAQUIT which is to empower Health Professionals, Allied Health Workers, ACCHO’s, Doctors, Nurses by training organisations with our free iSISTAQUIT smoking and vaping cessation training which provides CPD points and associated educational resources, treatment manual, patient flipcharts and My Journey Booklet for clients resulted from listening to health professionals.

Senior Projects Manager of iSISTAQUIT Rebecca Hyland who is a proud Kamilaroi- Gomeroi woman, says that iSISTAQUIT has come a long way to get to where we are today and that our groundbreaking culturally informed research has empowered community and enabled Health Professionals such as Holly Coppins, Melukerdee, Nurse/Midwife with the confidence to have that sometimes difficult conversation with her clients.

As Holly shares, “Smoking cessation in pregnancy is a passion of mine, and the iSISTAQUIT training has greatly enhanced my confidence and ability to provide better care to my clients.

The iSISTAQUIT resources are highly relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and the approach can be applied to anyone and their family on their quit journey. This makes it even more powerful, as you are not only supporting the pregnant mother but also the entire family in creating a healthy environment for all members.

I highly encourage fellow health professionals to take part in this training—it’s an investment in both your professional development and the quality of care you provide to your clients, as well as the ACCHO you work for.”

When we listen to community and ensure that our research is grounded in culture, informed and delivered by community you see positive results on the ground”, iSISTAQUIT’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee is one such structure that enforces the governance necessary for the delivery of culturally informed research and projects grounded in local community knowledges, needs and aspirations. says Professor Gillian Gould.

Last year, the team launched the SISTABIRTH Research Project, based at Southern Cross University, partnering with three unique Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations across the country to improve maternal and baby health outcomes by embedding cultural strength and leadership in care delivery—including through best practice Indigenous-led smoking cessation care using the iSISTAQUIT program.

By acknowledging the interconnectedness of a bub’s wellbeing with its environmental surroundings. SISTABIRTH is an innovative, culturally informed best practice research project providing healthier futures for First Nations families and communities and empowering health practitioners to lead the way, says Aboriginal Project Manager Kym Yuke (Yugambeh).

4. iSISTAQUIT had a great time celebrating #WorldNoTobaccoDay2025

iSISTAQUIT had a great time celebrating #WorldNoTobaccoDay2025 at Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service alongside the Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service Tackling Indigenous Smoking Team.

A huge turnout with community! Lets make everyday world no tobacco day!

5. Coolamon community, iSISTAQUIT and SISTABIRTH meet last week to discuss their projects

Presenting Coolamon communities with SISTABIRTH Yarning mat. Pam Brook, Evie Wood Coolamon Communities, Kym Yuke (SISTABIRTH) Rebecca Hyland (iSISTAQUIT).

Coolamon community, iSISTAQUIT and SISTABIRTH meet last week to discuss their projects, that are all working towards better health outcomes for Aboriginal mums and bubs.

Coolamon community supplies beautiful baskets as a safe sleeping space and the basket is filled with beautiful products for mums and bubs.

iSISTAQUIT works to educate staff who work with Aboriginal pregnant women to appropriately support mums to quit smoking so that bub is born healthy and breathing fresh air.

SISTABIRTH is working with three community controlled health services across Australia to develop a Birthing on Country plan so each community can design maternity care that supports mums and bubs to have the best possible health outcomes.

6. Bullinah Aboriginal Medical Service in Ballina, NSW, is proud to be one of three Indigenous community partners in the SISTABIRTH Birthing on Country journey.

Bullinah Aboriginal Medical Service in Ballina, NSW, is proud to be one of three Indigenous community partners in the SISTABIRTH Birthing on Country journey.

Last year, our Aboriginal Project Manager Kym Yuke (Yugambeh) and the SISTABIRTH team joined a local yarning circle, listening to Birthing on Country stories and community visions that are shaping a 5-year plan for maternity care—care that is led by culture, informed by community, and backed by evidence.

The SISTABIRTH Project, based at Southern Cross University, is partnering with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations across the country to improve maternal and baby health outcomes by embedding cultural strength and leadership in care delivery—including through Indigenous-led smoking cessation with iSISTAQUIT.

📖 As a lasting legacy, we’re creating a Birthing on Country stories book with powerful imagery captured by Bobbi Lockyer.

7. Capturing Stories Pangula Mannamurna SISTABIRTH Birthing on Country

From left to right The Pangula SISTABIRTH BoC team, including Indigenous midwives Amie Brant (Yankunytjatjara, Antakarinja and Arabuna) holding baby Mia, Jen McGrath (Gunditjmara) with baby Abbey, along with Cultural Advisor Aunty Michelle Jacquelin-Furr (Boandik), and project support Karen Hales (Canadian First Nations Cree Registered Nurse).

In March, the SISTABIRTH team at Pangula Mannamurna, in collaboration with Southern Cross University, and renowned Indigenous photographer Bobbi Lockyer  began capturing powerful Birthing on Country stories and photographs. These stories will form part of a commemorative book for the three SISTABIRTH sites, celebrating the strength, culture, and connection of each community.

The Pangula SISTABIRTH team, including Indigenous midwives Amie Brant (Yankunytjatjara, Antakarinja and Arabuna) holding baby Mia, and Jen McGrath (Gunditjmara) with baby Abbey, along with Cultural Advisor Aunty Michelle Jacquelin-Furr (Boandik), and project support Karen Hales (Canadian First Nations Cree Registered Nurse), travelled across culturally significant sites in Mount Gambier to document the stories and landscapes that shape the women’s stories.

This  work is part of the broader SISTABIRTH project, led by Southern Cross University in partnership with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), and aims to honour and elevate community voices in the design of culturally safe maternity care.

Later this year, Bobbi Lockyer will visit Urapuntja Health Service and Bullinah Health Service to complete the photographic and storytelling work for those communities, further strengthening the legacy of the SISTABIRTH project.
